Background and objectives: The University of Dar es Salaam Entrepreneurship Centre (UDEC) was established in 1999 initially within the Faculty of Commerce and Management (FCM). From 2001, it became a University-wide Centre.
The vision of the Center is to become a leading center of excellence in enterprise development nationally and regionally. The mission of the Centre is to facilitate the development of entrepreneurial capacity in Tanzania . It aims to be an effective catalyst for job creation, economic development and poverty alleviation through research, consultancy and policy advocacy in the area of enterprise development, a key factor in the upward mobility of micro and small sized enterprises in Tanzania .
More specifically UDEC seeks to: - Carry out research and provide consultancy services on enterprise development to government, development agencies, business development service (BDS) providers, business firms as well as individual entrepreneurs;
- Strengthen the capacity of institutions and net works involved in supporting the establishment and development of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs);
- Produce and disseminate innovative training and counseling programmes, methodologies and materials for enterprise development;
- Encourage students and graduates of education and training institutions to choose self-employment as a career and empower them to succeed therein; and
- Promote and co-ordinate enterprise development initiatives at the University of Dar es Salaam.
